Throughout his life he enjoyed camping at Lake Tahoe and Yosemite and cars of all eras – from his father’s 1926 Model T Ford pick-up truck to keeping up with the latest models. He was an avid student of military history and enjoyed his time as a volunteer at the Aerospace Museum of California.

“Our planet’s future climate is inextricably tied to the future of its forests.”
(Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2018 Report)

Healthy forests = Healthy climate

America’s investment in sound forest management has been replaced with escalating expenditures on wildfire and tree mortality.

America is covered with 750 million acres of forests (1/3 of our land base), which are now burning and rotting at an unprecedented rate. Our forest products industry, our logging infrastructure, and our professional forester ranks are rapidly diminishing. California alone has shuttered over 150 sawmills and biomass power plants in the past 25 years, with only 35 remaining.

Instead of restoring and maintaining our “carbon-capture systems,” under our watch, our forests are becoming places where towns burn down, ecosystems are destroyed,
and people die.

America is now the second leading IMPORTER of lumber in the world. Considering our abundant natural resources, coupled with the best foresters, loggers, and sawmilling infrastructure in the world, this is disgraceful!

OBJECTIVES of a REAL “Green Deal”

Increase our forests’ carbon-capture capabilities by 10% by 2030. Promote sound forest management with projects that produce healthy, resilient forests. Healthy
forests capture carbon and are America’s best and most impactful contribution to slow global warming.

As we did with America’s energy sector, target a goal of America becoming the world’s leading exporter of timber products and technology by 2030.

Build on the President’s Executive Order 13855 promoting better forest management. Double expenditures on forest management projects in the 2021 budget. Double them again by 2024. Sound forest management will reduce wildfires, their greenhouse gas emissions and associated costs.

Resilient forests = Increased carbon capture = Slowed global warming

The 70TH Annual Tuolumne Lumber Jubilee is seeking donations/sponsors to help us this year. Each sponsor will have a banner of recognition with company or persons name who donated.

The tradition of the Jubilee helps instill the education of the logging industry in kids, adults, and those who attend. This year we want to have a piece of logging equipment (felller buncher, loader, etc.) at the show for the public to see and learn about. We want everyone to have the enjoyment and fun of the Jubilee itself, while learning about our Forestry management practices.

We are hoping to add more logging events this year, including having a big truck and classic car show following the parade. We want to have our parade filled with trucks and cars again. The sponsorship/donations will go directly to our costs for the Jubilee, which have increased tremendously and have threatened this time-honored tradition to fade away.

Some of our events include:
Axe Throwing Competitions
Hot Power Saw
Stock Power Saw
Choker Setting
Crosscut Sawing
“Jack & Jill Events” (Man and Woman)
Kids events
AND not to be forgotten, the most exciting events of the show…
The “Bull of the Woods”
This rarely seen event features two
competitors standing toe to toe, duking it out until one of them is knocked off the log on which they are standing.
The “Tug O’ War”
This test of a man’s will, endurance and power require intense training. The “Tug of War” is a traditional team contest and this Jubilee’s main event since its inception. Ours is one of two logging shows that still carry out this ultimate feat of strength.

The Jubilee dates are June 20-23, 2019
Located at Tuolumne Memorial Park,
18301 Bay Ave. Tuolumne, Ca 95379

Donations can be sent to:

On Monday, January 7 at 1:00 pm in Red Bluff; ACL urges you to attend a CARB workshop on agriculture equipment: support money incentives, oppose costly and dangerous regulations, warn about fire risk of logging equipment retrofits and seek replacement of equipment “on our timeline, not theirs”

CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD(CARB) WORKSHOP

WHEN:

MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2019
1:00 PM TO 3:00 PM

WHERE:
TEHAMA COUNTY AIR POLLUTION CONTROL DISTRICT OFFICE
1834 WALNUT STREET
RED BLUFF, CALIFORNIA 96080

Associated California Loggers board members and staff have been working with the California Air Resources Board(CARB) for years, and we have argued for more meetings and hearings in the more rural parts of the state. The one we had in Redding a few years ago sent a clear message to the board and was instrumental in getting us relief from mandatory off road emission reductions. The one that is coming up on Monday, January 7 in Red Bluff will be an important one to attend. The topic is “agricultural equipment” but that includes logging equipment. The workshop is designed to discuss possible money being made available towards the purchase of logging equipment in 2019 and beyond, but the financial and wildfire dangers of any regulation that would force loggers to replace their equipment prematurely with dangerous retrofits, may be on the agenda.

ACL believes that the message that CARB needs to hear is: provide incentive money for emission reductions and allow us to update our equipment on our schedule, not theirs. We need to stress the very real potential of starting fires with any attempt to retrofit existing equipment and the fact that, for many of us, a mandate to update our logging equipment on top of the truck component will simply put us out of business.

ACL believes that with incentive money (as hoped for from CARB’s “FARMER” Program for the Replacement of Agriculture Equipment) and no mandatory time line we can become compliant over time without the increased potential of more fires in the forest and the loss of many living wage jobs.

ACL also believes that if we do not get a good turn out when these opportunities avail themselves CARB will not travel up to rural California where they hear the unfiltered truth about the impacts of these regulations. The more people that show interest, the more likely staff are to hold additional workshops in r rural areas.

As of right now, ACL President Hardie Tatum, Executive Director Eric Carleson, and numerous ACL Board Members (including Past Presidents) are intending to travel to Red Bluff on Monday January 7, to attend and likely testify at this workshop.

You are urged to attend. You do not have to speak, but you can if you want to.

INFORMATION BELOW:

A Public Workshop on the “FUNDING AGRICULTURAL REPLACEMENT MEASURES FOR EMISSION REDUCTIONS (FARMER) PROGRAM)” is scheduled at the Tehama Air Pollution Control District on Jan 7, 2019 from 1pm -3pm. Here is the link: https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/mailouts/msc1821/msc1821.pdf.

The Tehama County Air Pollution District office is in Red Bluff. Again, here is further information on the day, date and time of the workshop on January 7:

Barbara Joyce Martin passed peacefully Monday, December 17, 2018 at her home with family at her side.

Joyce was born December 24, 1933 to Shirley and Laura Hutchins. Joyce’s grandfather, William Hutchins, was one of the first settlers of what is now called Tamarack in Calaveras County and one of the founding members of the local Seventh Day Adventist Church. Her father, Shirley, was a mason and rancher, residing in the valley below Twain Harte Lake along South Fork Road, where Joyce grew up.

Joyce attended Soulsbyville Elementary and graduated from Sonora High School.

Joyce married Joe Martin, Jr. in 1953. Together Joyce and Joe operated Joe Martin Logging and Trucking (T-5) and Ranches for nearly 50 years, until their retirement in 2000. The couple belonged to several industry-related organizations, such as the Associated California Loggers, Sierra Cascade Logging Conference, and the Tuolumne County Farm Bureau. Joyce was a member of the Tuolumne County Cowbells, Omega Nu, and the Mother Lode Fair Board. Joyce and Joe loved this local community and realized the importance of giving back through philanthropic endeavors.

Her family remembers her as a very loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. One distinctive quality most remember about Joyce was her ability and willingness to listen. After spending time with her, people came away feeling uplifted and in better spirits. Her non-judgmental acceptance of others was also valued and was a beautiful trait.

Joyce led a rich life with a close, loving family, along with several lifelong friends. Joe and Joyce traveled thousands of miles across the United States and the world taking well-deserved vacations, often in the family airplane or motorhome. One of Joyce’s favorite places, however, was Eagle Meadows, where she enjoyed the family cabin.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, in 2013. She is survived by her three children, Guy Martin (Jelane), Jodie Rodriguez (Ron), and Stacey Dodge (Rick); grandchildren Jacey Rodriguez-Serva (Jim), Nicki Holt (Jared), Rori Wylie (Jordan), Kyle Dodge, Grant Dodge, and Paige Martin; great-grandchildren Kylie and Katie Serva, Miles and Jay Holt, Cort and Levi Wylie, and foster daughter Debbie Penrose.

Joyce’s family is holding a Celebration of Life at 11:30 AM on Friday, December 21st at Calvary Chapel Sonora, located at 19889 Soulsbyville Road. Remembrances can be sent to your favorite charity.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: ACL Vice President Mike Albrecht of Sierra Resource Management will offer a eulogy.)
