A MESSAGE FROM THE SANTA CRUZ COUNTY RESOURCE CONSERVATION DISTRICT:
Hello,
I work for the Resource Conservation District of Santa Cruz County. We are announcing our Invitation to Bid for our Aptos Truck Trail Forest Health & Fire Resilience Project. I am hoping that you would be able to post this invitation to your job board(s). Project information:
This project is a 211-acre CalFIRE funded vegetation management and prescribed fire preparation project located along the Aptos Truck Trail in and near the Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.
The Nisene Marks watershed has not experienced a large scale fire, either prescribed or wild, since the redwood forest portions were clearcut over 100 years ago. Many fire-adapted ecosystems such as chaparral and hardwood systems occur along the Aptos Truck Trail, with historic fire return intervals ranging from 15 – 75 years. In these systems, occasional fire is necessary to preserve ecosystem function. However, the presence of nearby residential development and an increase in severe fire weather in the past century necessitates that before fire can be safely reintroduced, fire surrogate treatments must be conducted to reduce the risk of extreme fire behavior. The primary goal of this project is to ready the Aptos Truck Trail area for the reintroduction of prescribed fire.
Treatments in the project area will focus on rearranging and reducing downed woody debris within the immediate vicinity of the Aptos Truck Trail and portions of Buzzard Lagoon Road through piling and lop and scatter; felling dead trees within 100ft of the Aptos Truck Trail and Buzzard Lagoon Road; masticating ladder fuels and understory vegetation up to 8”DBH to allow safe access to burn units; and felling live Douglas-fir up to 24” DBH throughout the project area to mimic more severe fire effects.
